The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass
2007, New Line Cinema, PG-13

The Golden Compass is the movie adaptation of a series of novels called His Dark Materials which are geared toward children. They describe the struggle of saving a particle called Dust from the enemies called The Church who believe it to be Original Sin and who are trying to destroy it. By the end of the series, the characters find Dust (sin) to be self-actualization and go on to have their hand in killing The Authority (God).

While there are many other anti-Christian metaphors, the books implicitly go on to say things like, "the Christian religion…is a very powerful and convincing mistake, that's all." "For all of [the Church's]'s tried to suppress and control every natural impulse. And when it can't control them, it cuts them out."

The books are often called the antitheisis to the Chronicles of Narnia which have a solid Christian message. While the movie softens the true meanings of the series, stay clear, very clear. This is a dangerous series geared toward the most impressionable people. Don't let the cool graphics and cute armored bears fool you. Negative Five Stars.
