PUBLISHER'S NOTE
April + May 2007

I love to hear inspirational stories. People that have overcome great obstacles and achieved amazing feats and then gone on to benefit their community. It gives the rest of us something to strive for. An example to follow.

Last year I had the privilege of hearing Jermain Taylor give a speech. But it was not his boxing history that I found so impressive. Nor was it one of his titles or honors. Those things that he was introduced for were just icing on the cake; tools he could use to accomplish something greater. His real achievement as far as I was concerned was his humble attitude and his constant mention of appreciation to his mother Carlois. He gave her credit for her example of hard work, strict but loving discipline, and the expectations she had for her children to do well in life and be respectable citizens. His speech convinced me that Carlois was a story of heroism that Searcy Living needed to share. An example to all who have little to start with; that God can multiply their resources and bless their life. And maybe she is even unknowingly an example to those who have much. Maybe if you read between the lines you can see that if we give children every material desire that they have, it may take away their enthusiasm to grow into giving, productive adults.

Jermain was also very complimentary about his wife. His respect and admiration for her was all encompassing. Thank you Carlois, for raising such a fine young man. I know we can all learn from your example.
